Academic Year The academic year at the University of Hawaii at Manoa includes Fall, Spring, and Summer. (example: Fall 2008, Spring 2009, Summer 2009)
Accrued Interest The amount of interest you are charged on the unpaid balance of your loan(s).
Assets Elements of your and your family's financial worth; includes real estate other than your primary residence, stocks, bonds, cash savings, but not a family farm, retirement, or pre-paid tuition assets.
Award Letter A letter notifying financial aid applicants of the types and amounts of aid offered, responsibilities, and the terms and conditions of each award.
Capitalization of Interest Adding the amount of unpaid interest to the amount originally borrowed
Cost of Attendance (COA) The total amount required for you to attend school. It includes student tuition, fees, books and supplies, housing, meals, transportation and personal expenses.

Default Failure to repay a loan according to the terms you agreed upon when signing your promissory note. Action by the lending institution to collect payment may result, including notifying national credit bureaus of the default. This may affect your credit rating for a long period of time.
Deferment Period during which loan repayment is postponed.
Dependent Student A student who answered no to all of the following:
  • Born before January 1, 1984 (for the 2007-08 application year).
  • Enrolled or will be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at the beginning of the 2007-08 year.
  • As of the day you submitted your original 2007-08 FAFSA, were you married?
  • Do you have children who receive more than 50% support from you?
  • Do you have any dependents other than children who receive more than 50% support from you?
  • Both of your parents are deceased or you are (or were until the age of 18) a ward of the court.
  • You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training.
  • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
Direct Stafford Loan See also William D Ford Federal Direct Loan Program
Eligible Non-citizen Citizens and eligible non-citizens may receive loans from FFEL Program at participating foreign schools. Citizens of the Federated States of Micronesia , the Republic of Palau are eligible for Federal Pell Grants, or Federal Work Study.
Expected Family Contribution (EFC) The portion of your and your family's financial resources that should be available to help pay educational costs, based on a federal formula.

Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program Private lenders provide funds that are guaranteed by the federal government.  FFEL Loans include subsidized and unsubsidized FFEL loans, FFEL PLUS loans, and FFEL consolidation loans.
Financial Aid Package The amount of financial aid, including scholarships and other outside aid that a student receives.
Financial Need The difference between your expected family contribution and the school's student budget; also known as your financial aid eligibility.
Financial Obligation Money owed to the University of Hawaii due to unpaid balances from tuition, fees, student housing, or repayment of federal aid due to an overaward situation or a complete withdrawal.  Hold are placed on a student's University of Hawaii record.  These holds will affect transcript requests, registration, graduation, etc.
Full Time Enrollment For undergraduates you must be registered for at least 12 credits, for graduates, 8 credits in most cases.
Grant Financial aid that does not need to be repaid.
Graduate Student Is enrolled in a program that is above the baccalaureate level, has completed the equivalent of at least 3 academic years of full-time study at an institution of higher education (either before entrance to the program or as part of the program itself), and is not receiving Title IV aid as an undergraduate student for the period of enrollment.
Half Time Enrollment For undergraduates you must be registered for at least 6 credits, for graduates, 4 credits.

Independent Student A student who answered yes to at least one of the following:
  • Born before January 1, 1984 (for the 2007-08 application year).
  • Enrolled or will be enrolled in a master's or doctoral program at the beginning of the 2007-08 year.
  • As of the day you submitted your original 2007-08 FAFSA, were you married?
  • Do you have children who receive more than 50% support from you?
  • Do you have any dependents other than children who receive more than 50% support from you?
  • Both of your parents are deceased or you are (or were until the age of 18) a ward of the court.
  • You are currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training.
  • You are a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
 
Need-Based Financial aid that depends on your or your family's financial situation; most government sources of financial aid are need-based.
Priority Deadline March 1st.  Your FAFSA application must be processed by the U.S. Department of Education by this date.
Professional Student Is enrolled in a program that is above the baccalaureate level or leads to a first professional degree, has completed the equivalent of at least 3 academic years of full-time study at an institution of higher education (either before entrance to the program or as part of the program itself), and is not receiving Title IV aid as an undergraduate student for the period of enrollment.
Promissory Note A legally binding contract between a borrower and lender listing all terms and conditions of a student loan.

Satisfactory Academic Progress To be making satisfactory academic progress at UHM, a student must maintain a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.0 for undergraduates and 3.0 for graduates and complete your degree objective within the maximum semesters of eligibility.
Scholarship Gift award based on grades or other achievement; usually not based on financial need.
School Code This is the Federal School code you need to put on FAFSA . Our school code is: 001610 .
Student Aid Report (SAR) The report summarizing the information you provided on your FAFSA.
Untaxed Income All income received that's not reported to the IRS, or is reported, but not taxed. May include Social Security benefits, Earned Income Credit welfare payments, untaxed capital gains, interest on tax-free bonds, military allowances, and others.
Verification The procedure where a school checks the information you reported on the FAFSA, usually by requesting a copy of your signed tax returns, and in some cases, those of your parents.
William D Ford Federal Direct Loan Program Also known as Direct Loans.  Eligible students and parents borrow directly from the U.S. Department of Education at participating schools.  The University of Hawaii at Manoa is not a Direct Loan School.
